Internationale Sportveranstaltungen sind immer auch politisch: Die Mannschaften kommen in das Stadion, die Nationalhymnen werden gespielt – die Mannschaften repräsentieren ihre Nation. Im Falle eines sportlichen Sieges steigt die Achtung. In anderen Worten: Sport ist ein Instrument der sogenannten „Soft Power“, wie Joseph Nye einst sagte. Darüber hinaus kann eine große internationale Sportveranstaltung das Image des Gastgeberlandes entscheidend verbessern. Ein Beispiel hierfür sind die Olympischen Winterspiele im russischen Sotschi. She sees the result of the referendum as a reaction against the EU centralism. Other European nations might as well “reconquer their sovereignty” in the way the British did.
